Brief Overview

Do you feel your manual therapy skills need brushing up?

Would you like to learn new treatment techniques and about the latest evidence base surrounding spinal manual therapy?

Have you completed a SOMM foundation course in the past and feel your manual therapy skills could do with a refresh?

This one-day course aims to provide clinicians with a great overview of the current evidence base surrounding Manual Therapy and allow students to learn new effective treatment techniques for the Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar spine.

Manual therapy techniques taught on the course will be ‘Musculoskeletal medicine’ techniques and students will cover the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions. There will be case based discussions and students will be encouraged to explore how they would integrate spinal manual therapy into a holistic treatment approach for their patients. There will also be lectures looking at the history of manual therapy, evidence-based practice, critical thinking and the future of manual therapy in physiotherapy practice.

The course is multi-professional, and you will learn in a welcoming relaxed environment, guided by experienced SOMM tutors. The day will be highly interactive and there will be ample opportunities to discuss how the new treatment techniques could be integrated into your day-to-day clinical practice.

Course Aims

  • Discuss SOMM spinal clinical models
  • Discuss relevant spinal red flags specific to each spinal area.
  • Learn spinal manual therapy techniques for Cervical/Thoracic/Lumbar regions.
  • Engage in critical thinking and evidence-based practice relating to Spinal Manual Therapy.

Entry Requirements:

  • This course is open to qualified Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Sports therapists.
  • We strongly suggest at least 1-2 years post qualification experience in the musculoskeletal field which will enhance your experience on the course.

Unit 3

Thoracic Spine and Sacroiliac Joint

Unit 3 is a 5 day course covering the thoracic spine and sacroiliac joint, advanced techniques and principles of lumbar injections, plus a review of Units 1 & 2 in preparation for the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine membership examination on the final day.

Unit 2

Lumbar Spine and Lower Limb

Unit 2 is a 4 day course lumbar spine, hip, knee and ankle/foot.

This highly practical unit aims to extend knowledge in functional anatomy and develop competence in joint examination, assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment, including manual and injection techniques.

Unit 1

Cervical Spine and Upper Limb

Unit 1 is a 4 day course covering the cervical spine, shoulder, elbow and wrist/hand.

This highly practical unit aims to extend knowledge in functional anatomy and develop competence in joint examination, assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment, including manual and injection techniques.
