The need to understand the significance of the many extra or special tests as well as reproduce them accurately has created a demand for this course programme that provides a clear explanation of when and why each test should be used and how to perform the manoeuvres accurately. The programme covers the theory underpinning the use of special tests in the physical examination and blends this with clinically relevant anatomy, the significance of a positive test and appropriate management strategies (e.g. investigations etc). There is ample practical time provided with supervision by experienced clinical tutors.

The course is open to physiotherapists, doctors and other musculoskeletal practitioners and can be accessed as a stand-alone 2 day clinical programme - follow the link here to book your place on the 2 day stand-alone course.

Course

Outline content

The course content includes the theory underpinning the use of special tests in examination and blends this with clinically relevant anatomy, the significance of a findings, and appropriate ongoing management and investigations, with supervised practical time.

More

· Strengths and limitations of clinical examination

· Appraising and interpreting the evidence

· Understanding specificity, sensitivity and likelihood ratios

· Role of imaging in MSK practice

· Anatomy, biomechanics and pathology

· Special tests demonstration and practical

· The course will include theoretical lectures, tutorials, supervised practical time, case scenarios and revision activities.

Module

Rationale & aims

This module on special tests sets out to inculcate and advance students’ clinical reasoning in the appropriate use of special tests for specific peripheral conditions. The module aims to advance knowledge of peripheral functional anatomy and to develop an advanced level of handling skills required for the performance of special tests. It further aims to present the relevance and significance of the evidence relating to special tests within the literature and to foster critical analysis of the findings, along with the role of imaging in peripheral musculoskeletal medicine towards referral for appropriate investigation if necessary.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Rationalise and critically reflect on why, when and how to perform special tests for upper and lower limb pathologies.

2. Demonstrate advanced level of handling skills and functional anatomy to perform special tests.

3. Critically evaluate the evidence relating to special tests.

4.  Demonstrate critical understanding of the findings of special tests and the role and aims of imaging and surgery in peripheral musculoskeletal medicine towards referral for appropriate investigation.

Module teaching, learning and assessment strategies

This module will use a wide range of teaching/learning strategies including lectures, demonstrations, group work, supervised practicals and tutorials.

Students will demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes by producing an assignment in two parts, both of which must be passed:

·  A 1,500 word critical appraisal of the literature surrounding a special test chosen by the student. (Learning outcome 3).

·  A 2,500 word portfolio reflective essay that demonstrates satisfaction of learning outcomes 1,2, 3 and 4 providing specific examples of how they have been achieved.

Both pieces of work will be marked on a 20 point scale for each learning outcome and a grade will be awarded for each part of the assignment, both of which must be passed.  The overall grade for the assignment will be drawn from both pieces of work on a 30%:70% basis.
